The New Wisconsin Idea Our Economic Bill of Rights The original Wisconsin Idea was born of necessity in an era when robber barons held vast swaths of wealth and power. In that time, the economy and the government were dominated by the rich whose monopolies forced the working class towards poverty. The Wisconsin Idea launched a progressive movement that transformed our state and inspired Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal and Economic Bill of Rights.

Despite the century in between, in 2025, much like 1915, a cadre of billionaires are running our country and profiting off the backs of working people. Working families across Wisconsin struggle to afford necessities while the rich keep getting richer and Elon Musk and Donald Trump set themselves up to profit off the decimation of our federal government. It’s time for a New Wisconsin Idea centered around economic justice for all Wisconsinites.

Today the United States is wealthier than it has ever been. However, income and investments are skewed dramatically to the wealthiest. The rich are highly under-taxed. We need to undo this trend and fund our country’s future, not protect the billionaire class.

To reshape our future, we must reclaim our past. We, the undersigned organizations, are forming a coalition to fight for a New Wisconsin Idea to rebuild Wisconsin and fight back against the billionaire takeover of our government.
