Told that the Republican plan would lead to people’s untimely demise, this was the response of the US Senator from Iowa Joni Ernst: Yes, we are all going to die. The Big Beautiful Bill Act will just make it more imminent for those on Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, Affordable Care Act, and those needing funding for at already-stretched rural hospitals.

Thank you, Joni, for the theme for our ‘Good Trouble Lives On’ protest event in Eagle River on July 17, 5-6 pm.

Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action commemorating the legacy of John Lewis that responds to the attacks on our human rights by the Trump administration and to remind us that in America, power lies within the people.

*On July 17, from 5-6 pm, we will stand and hold signs along Highway 45, by Eagle River’s Riverview Park and the opposite side of the Highway, on public right-of-way areas / sidewalks. The Park is accessed via the road BEHIND (and then to the NORTH) of Kwik Trip Convenience Store, 201 West Wall Street, Eagle River.

We will be north of the traffic lights at Kwik Trip Gas station, and attendees can park at Riverview Park, 125 W. Division Street. There is also public parking adjacent to the Eagle River Historical Museum, 116 South Railroad Street.

Please do not block pedestrian traffic and do not hinder highway or traffic lanes or entry to the highway itself. Please be safe and stay off curbs and the bridge and be mindful of all local ordinances including those that pertain to parking, traffic, trespass, littering, noise, conduct. If encountering inappropriate aggression, please do not respond but record their action and share with event safety volunteers.

Everyone should wear black… it’ll be a funeral and mourning theme…in protest of federal measures that not only cut our own benefits but the benefits of our neighbors, friends, and family. This will inevitably cause unnecessary hardship, pain, and untimely death. We’re all going to die…

Suggested items to bring: RIP sign with your own first name, black veils, skeletons, grim reaper, breathing apparatus, gurneys…wear what you would wear to a funeral…and signage that references the devastation caused by federal funding cuts affecting the health and well-being of Vilas County residents including those who rely on Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP (food assistance), Home and Community-Based Services, and also those who need health insurance to be treated at local rural hospitals.

Please note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
